SA: 1932 OSCAR GARDEN RECORD FLIGHT / CRASH. In April 1932 the British pilot attempted a record flight from Cape Town to London, the Spartan Hermes biplane to be flown over the route Bulawayo, Salisbury, Mpika, Lake Victoria, Juba, Kartoum, Cairo and Southern France. Only TWENTY covers were carried when the plane took off on the 21st April and CRASHED at Abercorn on the 22nd April. All mail was recovered and received a three line cachet "ACCIDENT AT ABERCORN / 22 APRIL 1932 / FLIGHT ABANDONED". An unusual use of an Imperial Airways Springbuck envelope, most of the carried covers being plain format. A wonderful example of this extremely rare record flight / crash mail, the cover showing an excellent clear strike of the cachet and additionally the "FOUND WITHOUT CONTENTS / GEVONDEN ZONDER INHOUD" handstamp.
