South Africa 1933 Victor Smith London - Cape Record Attempt


  • Envelope franked GB KGV 1d & ½d carried by Smith on his record attempt.
  • He departed Lympne Aerodrome at 02h00 on 9th March.
  • SIGNED BY SMITH at front left and on reverse;
  • with postmarks/cachets of intermediate stops in Perpignan, Oran, Reggan and Doula;
  • Cape Town Wingfield arrival cds 14 MAR 1933.
  • Smith carried only a very small number (apparently 6) of letters for personal friends.
  • With contemporary newspaper clipping and enclosed note commenting on his inability to have the stamps cancelled due to time of departure.

  • Smith reached Walvis Bay on 12th March seemingly within easy reach of breaking the Southbound record set by Amy Mollison. It was not to be. A combination of headwinds and shortage of fuel forced an unscheduled stop at Van Rhynsdorp which did not have the necessary amenities to enable him to take off at night. He reached Cape Town on the 13th March.
