South Africa 1926 RAF Pulford Cairo - Cape Survey, Whole Route

CHF2,435.00

  • 1926 RAF WING COMMANDER PULFORD CAIRO TO CAPE SURVEY FLIGHT:
  • Envelope prepared for carriage on this landmark Cairo - Cape flight.
  • Endorsed at top left "To be carried by Machine S1104, (signature) CWH Pulford, Wing Commander."
  • At top right a crisp strike of the oval Royal Air Force Heliopolis (Cairo) base cachet dated 1 MAR 1926 countersigned by Pulford.
  • Addressed to "Chris Merewether (being Lieut Commander CM Merewether RN), Anawatta, Addo, Cape Province."
  • Upon arrival in South Africa a 1d Ship adhesive was applied and cancelled by Roberts Heights (Pretoria) cds 7 April.
  • The survey flight comprised four Fairey IIID aircraft following the route flown by van Ryneveld & Brand in 1920.
  • Exceedingly few covers were carried/exist.
  • Seemingly covers were added from intermediate stops although literature only reflects items from Kisumu (3, ref Arrow), Livingstone & Bulawayo.
  • The subject letter patently amongst the most desirable as a whole-route example struck with the attractive Heliopolis cachet at origin.
  • We postulate that it is possibly the sole surviving such whole-route cover being the item of record illustrated on page 51 of Burrell's "Par Avion".
  • A rare & exceptional aerophilatelic showpiece for connoisseur of the pioneer flights.
