Orange River Colony 1903 KEVII 1d Die Proof Postage & Revenue

  • 1903-04 DIE PROOF of KEVII 1d,
  • but "Postage & Revenue" inscription,
  • frame plate only in black on glazed card
  • dated (in blue) 13 JUN 02 and marked BEFORE HARDENING.
  • Superb, scarce.
  • This plate was produced according to the original brief to De La Rue for a 1d Postage & Revenue design.
  • However in September of 1902 it was decided that all values would be inscribed Postage only.
  • This 1d plate was used to produce the 1902 colour trials including bicolours.
  • The plate would have fallen into disuse as the low values were printed as monocolours from single plates.
