Zanzibar 1895 QV 1r Overprint Vertically Downwards, Unique Block

  • 1895-96 QV 1r green & aniline-carmine ERROR, OVERPRINTED VERTICALLY DOWNWARDS (SG 18j Hall #26).
  • F-VF/M block of four with the overprint applied vertically between the stamps,
  • all three impressions of overprint showing small second "z".
  • Some separation vertically, perfectly reconstituted.
  • The overprints characteristically faint (attempted removal by printer after mistake was spotted),
  • under magnification plateable as Setting 3, R2/2-4,
  • with centre impression (straddling all four stamps!) exceptionally showing variety "BROKEN CAPITAL Z" and "NO DOT TO I".
  • Fresh, well-centered, vibrant colour.
  • One of two known blocks (unique with the R2/3 variety) being the largest recorded multiple of the error.
  • A Zanzibar exhibition showpiece.
  • Photo-cert: BPA 2018 (no longer present).
  • Ex Griffith-Jones.
  • (cv£1700+). See additional image.
  • The setting which produced this remarkable error was not previously known. What seems to have happened is that a full 12x10 pane, intended to receive the 6x10 setting on its left and right halves, was inadvertently inserted SIDEWAYS into the press - not difficult since a 12x10 pane was almost square - and thus received VERTICAL overprints (mostly partial and misplaced) on six horizontal rows of twelve, or 72 stamps. The other four rows will have completely missed the overprint.
