CAPE OF GOOD HOPE 1883 DE LA RUE APPENDIXES FUGITIVE INK TRIALS

CHF5,850.00

  • 1883 DE LA RUE APPENDIX SHEETS, FUGITIVE INK TRIALS:
  • "Appendix A" & "Appendix B" each being album-sized sheets emanating from the "Report upon the Adhesive Stamps of the Cape of Good Hope".
  • These Appendices dealt with the efficacy of fugitive inks as a countermeasure against cleaning with a) oxalic acid and b) benzine. The results are self-evident as per scans.
  • "Appendix A" headed "Stamps printed in 'Fugitive' ink." shows a strike of the (Alexandria) B01 handstamp in black which was used as the Trial Canceller; an uncancelled 1882 1d rose-red labelled "Left Intact"; a similar 1d now cancelled by the B01; a third 1d now labelled "... Treated with benzine...", the latter trial clearly successful as the basic stamp impression has to all purposes been removed.
  • Then "Appendix B" headed "Stamps printed in 'Singly Fugitive' ink." Bearing nine stamps (1882 1d, 6d & ½d all overprinted CANCELLED type D6a?) in three columns: intact, manuscript/oxalic acid and B01 trial defacements/benzine.
  • A fascinating insight into protection to prevent re-use of stamps.
  • Spectacular exhibition showpiece pages of great rarity.
  • Provenance: Antonio Bertolaja, Spink London, September 2007, £3600/CHF8450; mounted on his pages.
