1897 2d chocolate-brown (SG 62) handstamped "SPECIMEN" in violet with small italic type SA1. F/M, an exceedingly rare specimen thus.
This italic handstamp was utilised by the Cape Colony for defacement of incoming Record Book specimens that were not already marked "Specimen" and later, prior to Union, on a very small number of sets prepared for presentation purposes.
