Cape of Good Hope 1848 Soldiers Letter from Simon's Town

1848 SOLDIER'S LETTER from Simon's Town (known location for the Regiment) to England. A fine example of the MILITARY CONCESSIONARY MAIL. "From Private Richard Herbert, 2670 of C. Company, 1st. Battalion, 6th. Royal W. Regiment", with required endorsements and Officer's countersignature of Lieut Colonel John Michel, Commanding 6th Regiment for this military concessionary rate. Strike at lower left of the 1847 Undated Letter Stamp; 2 charge mark (the ship's Captains gratuity on letters received by private ship). Manuscript notation "More To Pay" with similar English circular handstamp. A rare & attractive example of this military mail. This regiment served on the Cape frontiers and played an important role in the War of the Axe and 8th Frontier War which began with the 1850 skirmishes in the Boomah Pass.
