Cape of Good Hope 1900 Mexican Wreck Salvaged Letter


1900 WRECK OF THE "MEXICAN": Envelope from Tylden CGH (cds MR 28 00) to England franked with a single Table Bay 1d. Bears outstanding crisp strike in red of the two-line "RECOVERED FROM WRECK OF MEXICAN" cachet. Relevant backstamps, a trifle crumpled as usual. Wonderful appaearance in neat small format, a superior quality example of "Mexican" wreck mail. Rare. The Union-Castle liner "Mexican" left Table Bay on 4th April 1900 for Southampton. At 2am on 5th April she was sunk by collision with the English transport "Winkfield" in fog approximately 80 miles out.
