Cape of Good Hope 1806 Medallion Handstamp to Simons Town, VF

c1806 Wrapper addressed to George Adams Esq at "Simons Town, So Africa" bearing a VF strike of the Oval Medallion handstamp applied at Cape Town. Endorsed "Post 1sk Pd" in manuscript, being the rate for a single sheet letter. Notwithstanding minor imperfections, an excellent example of this attractive Cape mark which was issued to the main post office of the Colony to record the pre-payment of postage for inland mail only. The design, with the words "Post Office" added, originated from the official seal introduced by Governor Sir David Baird and was very similar to the "May Britian Flourish" seal used in England.
