Cape of Good Hope 1807 Medallion Handstamp Wrapper, VF

c1807 Wrapper addressed to Hendrik van de Graaff at "Tulbagh" bearing a bold strike of the Oval Medallion handstamp applied at Cape Town. Endorsed "Post Paid" in manuscript with signature. Van de Graaff was the Landrost at Tulbagh from 1807 to 1817. Excellent example of this attractive Cape mark which was issued to the main post office of the Colony to record the pre-payment of postage for inland mail only. The design, with the words "Post Office" added, originated from the official seal introduced by Governor Sir David Baird and was very similar to the "May Britian Flourish" seal used in England.
