FORWARDING AGENTS: 1824 Entire PALIMPSET single sheet letter from London marvellously addressed to "Miss Andrews at Capt Caesar Andrews, Cape Regt - Graaff Reinett, Interior of Africa" further detailed "To the care of George Paton Esq - Army Agent - Cape of Good Hope, Africa". Superb strike in red of the large oval POST PAID SHIP LTR / LONDON dated 28 DE 1824. Manuscript rating "Pd 1/2" comprising 6d London single sheet ship letter rate of 1814, 2d ship Masters gratuity and 6d inland postage, totalling 1/2. The doubly written letter (palimpset) so executed to reduce the number of letter sheets and postage is sure to yield fascinating content - see accompanying scans. Remarkable early letter directed via the Eastern Frontier, this being shortly after the expanding settlements by the English settlers of 1820. Capably restored at left and with imperfections, a wonderful early forwarded letter, full of character, an exhibition piece. George Paton was a General Agent and appointed Agent to the Army in 1820. Captain JC Andrews commanded a military post on the Fish River.
