Cape of Good Hope 1857 Early Hopefield Oval on Unpaid Letter


1857 EARLY HOPEFIELD POSTMARK (OVAL DATESTAMP) ON POSTAGE DUE LETTER: Delightful tiny small format folded entire written at "Matjiesfontein 6 July 1857", entering the mails at Hopefield (oval datestamp JU 14 1857) to Cape Town with arrival oval JU 18. Posted unpaid, the letter was taxed 6d (4d postage plus 2d penalty) in manuscript. Use of black ink for the charge mark in compliance with convention that postage paid would be noted in red ink, postage due noted in black ink. This Hopefield oval datestamp a very early use, previously held to be the earliest, only superceded in Frescura's listings by a date of MY 10. A lovely example of unpaid mail, VF.
