1855 SOLDIER'S ENTIRE LETTER to England franked 1d deep brick-red Triangular, blued paper (SG 1a).
A fine early example of triangular franking for the PENNY CONCESSIONARY RATE.
Sender was
"Pte Wm Moores No 1758, 6th Royal Regt."
and the letter inside is headed
"Lines Drift 15th October 1855"
.
Bears required endorsements and Officer's countersignature for this military concessionary rate.
Adhesive has strong colour, crisply cancelled, clear to full margins.
Relevant backstamps include origin at Grahamstown with oval ds, Cape Town transit & Manchester arrival.
Charged
"4"
on receipt as carried by private ship.
Some overall even soiling lends a fine patina to a wonderful example of this military rate from the Eastern Frontier.
Full of character.
A rare cover.
