1864 SAILOR'S LETTER from
"George Williams / Seaman Royal Naval Hospital / Simons Town Cape of Good Hope"
to England.
Franked GB 1d red cancelled "250" numeral on arrival (cds AU 26 on reverse).
Cape Packet Devonport AU 25 1864 also struck on front.
Wonderful example of the PENNY CONCESSIONARY RATE,
the cover bearing required endorsements and Officer's (the Staff Surgeon in this instance) countersignature for the military concessionary rate.
Particularly elusive as the Naval (Sailor's) variant.
Some imperfections, overall aging patina lends character to an important exhibition piece.
Rare.
Interesting accepted use of GB adhesive (likely using shipboard available stamps) in this period at the cusp of availability of Triangular or Rectangular frankings.
