1879 SAILOR'S LETTER from
"Alfred Heppell, Seaman, HMS Industrys / Simons Bay."
to England.
Franked GB 1d red cancelled "B16" numeral (Plymouth & Bristol Sorting Carriage) on arrival (cds MR 14 on reverse).
The GB franking likely being use of shipboard-available stamps.
Wonderful example of the PENNY CONCESSIONARY RATE,
the cover bearing required endorsements and Officer's countersignature for the military concessionary rate.
Particularly elusive as the Naval (Sailor's) variant.
Some imperfections, overall aging patina lends character to an important exhibition piece.
Rare.
