Cape of Good Hope 1814 Wrapper with Oval Medallion

1814c Folded letter wrapper (paper watermarked "CH 1814") bearing partial strike of the Oval Medallion handstamp. Sent from the "Landdrost van Graaf Reinet" and addressed to the "Sekretaris ter Desolate Boedelkamer, Kaapstad.". Rated "4/-" in manuscript. Also known as the "Post Office Seal", this first handstamp was intended to record pre-payment of postage for inland mail only. The design, with the words "Post Office" added, originated from the official seal introduced by Govenor Sir David Baird and was very similar to the "May Britain Flourish" seal used in England.
