  • In 1882 the Cape Mounted Rifles was moved from King Williams Town to Umtata for peace-keeping garrison duties. The regiment was divided into two squadrons each of which contained four troops, these commanded by a lieutenant. The CMR Left Wing was staged to Kokstad and from August 1883 came under the command of Colonel Covington, the intended countersignee on this subject letter.
