1882 DOUBLE RATE UNION-CASTLE LETTER: The printed envelope of "L. Lippert & Co, Port Elizabeth" endorsed "Per S.S. Warwick Castle" franked Hope Seated 1/- & 3d cancelled Barred Numeral 2 of Port Elizabeth. Proving cds MY 3, red crayon "5" charge mark cancelled in blue crayon and the sailing date "9/5 82" possibly added in manuscript in Cape Town post office. Backstamped transit & arriival marks. A little perimeter crumpling, see scans, VF, most attractive.
The 1/3d postage (which includes the very scarce 3d deep claret SG 39a) pays double the foreign letter rate of 7½d per ½oz.
