Cape of Good Hope 1869 "Peuce" For "Pence" Error, Cover Front

1869 Envelope FRONT from Cape Town to Cradock franked with 1868 4d on 6d deep lilac but variety "PEUCE" for "PENCE" (SG 27a). Well tied by superb strike of BONC 1 which admirably leaves the variety letter "U" clear and unobscured. Crisp cds of Cape Town MY 1 69 alongside. One of the most elusive of the Rectangular period varieties, exceedingly so on cover thus. The stamp with full intact perforations and no defects, cv£700 as straight used stamp. A great Rectangular period rarity. Photo-cert: Eichele BPB. See detailed scans noting rounding to the letter present at base with the straight-edged "feet" at top.
