Boer War 1900 Boer Censorship "Velddienst" per Generaal Snijman

  • The letter, likely originating in the field and thence routed via Pretoria (9 APR & 1 MEI) and Lourenco Marques (15 MAI), was carried without franking.
  • Watford arrival cds JU 8 00.
  • Perimeter imperfections, a pleasing patina & full of character.
  • A rare example of General Snijman acting as Field Censor.
  • An exceptional piece.
  • The writer, Trooper Urlwin, Rhodesia Regiiment, was taken POW on 31st March 1900 in an action where the Boer forces were led by Generaal Snijman, one of the most capable of the Boer generals.
  • Generaal Snijman commanded the Boer forces on the Mafeking front.
  • As with this letter he acted as Censor for POW mail in the field.
