CAPE: 1901 CLANWILLIAM FANCY RUBBER CANCELLER: Envelope of L.G.H. Pocock, Law & General Agent, Clanwilliam, addressed to Cape Town franked 1d Table Bay tied by strike of the "Clanwilliam" rubber canceller in violet. Triangular censor markin red, great strike. Cape Town arrival squared circle cds on reverse. Opened out for display, minor perimeter imperfections, F, one of few existing.
One of only two such examples ever handled by us. The canceller normally in use was removed or damaged at this time. Cape "rebels" numbering 1500 were active in the north-western Cape in the area from Paarl to the north of the De Aar railway line. Goldblatt (1984) states "Very few such covers appear to have survived" whilst Frescura (2002) recorded a single example dated 14 AU. (not one of the two handled by us). Thus, minimum 3 recorded.
