1947 Registered envelope franked with blocks of four of the ROYAL VISIT set 1d - 3d (SG 111-113) each with central strike of the special oval Royal Visit datestamp dated 17 II D47 (FIRST DAY). Cover SIGNED BY DESIGNER of the stamps (Joe Prentice) who has affixed a small photo of himself at work, the cover addressed to his wife in Pretoria. Couple small imperfections not detracting from an interesting piece of memorabilia that lifts an otherwise fairly staid era of Union philately. Joe Prentice was Chief Designer for the Government Printing Works and responsible for many of the Union stamps in the post-war period when production was in-house in Pretoria.
