1884 REDIRECTED MOURNING COVER being a charming small format envelope incoming from England (franked 6d QV tied Sidmouth cds JY 24) to Newcastle endorsed "via Dartmouth pr Grantully Castle July 25 1884". Forwarded to Moodies Reef, Transvaal, the redirection fee paid with Natal QV 4d brown tied Newcastle cds 25 8 84. Relevant transit marks on reverse. Attractive, rare combination. A tad roughly opened, F-VF.
After the first British Occupation and before Natal joined the UPU (1 July 1892), redirection of mail to the ZAR was not free. During this period the interstate rate of 4d as per the convention of 1 June 1877 with the Transvaal was also the applied rate for redirected mail until 1 January 1886.
