Rhodesia 1893 Royal Seal of Lobengula King of the Matabele


c1893 Albino impression on piece (127x50mm) being the ROYAL ELEPHANT SEAL OF LOBENGULA, KING OF THE MATABELE. With Elephant in side profile contained within an oval, inscribed below LO BENGULA. Notated in manuscript: "Royal Seal of Lobengula King of the Matabele / Seal rescued from the fire when the King fled & burnt his kraal at Bulawayo." Arising out of the instability following the 1888 Rudd concession the Matabele War began in 1893. Following defeat by the British Lobengula burnt down and escaped his Royal Kraal at Bulawayo. This seal a remarkable representation of this iconic African tribal Giant for whom the Elephant was such a fitting symbology. Rare, an exhibition piece for connoisseur of the Regional history.
