Ceylon 1884 QV Handpainted Essay, Showpiece

1884 HANDPAINTED ESSAY for a large format 1r12c stamp finely executed in rose and Chinese white washes on tracing paper, endorsed "The design & colours of existing 2R50c". An imperf proof for a 24c value (itself prepared for use but never issued) has been applied next to this essay and the endorsement altered to read "actual colour proof". This 1r12c essay, which is very close in design to the 1879 2r50c stamp, was ordered by the Crown Agents in 1884 and was approved in 1885, although the actual 1R12c stamp was not issued until 1887. A unique and highly important essay. A magnificent exhibition showpiece for connoisseur! Ex De La Rue archives.
The letter ordering this essay is reproduced in The De La Rue History by John Easton.
