Malta 1902 1d on 2½d Overprinted Specimen

1902 1d on 2½d dull blue (SG 36). VF/M example overprinted SPECIMEN (type MAL1). Scarce, a significantly underrated specimen stamp. Typically in this period this stamp - which was surcharged locally - would have been distributed through the UPU without SPECIMEN defacement. In this cae the stamp was both surcharged AND overprinted SPECIMEN locally. See additional image below.
The 1885 ½d to 1/- were distributed on 23 December 1884 and the 1886 5/- on 22 October 1885. These and later issues were overprinted or perforated SPECIMEN following the normal British Colonial pattern. However, stamps overprinted or surcharged locally in the 1920s and the locally printed Postage Due stamps were circulated in normal unused condition. The only exception is the 1902 "One Penny" on 2½d which was surcharged and overprinted SPECIMEN locally.
