SA: 1933 RAF CRANWELL - WALVIS BAY RECORD FLIGHT: Gayford & Nicholetts took off from Cranwell, England intent on a non-stop flight to Cape Town. Due to headwinds and fuel shortage they were forced to land at Walvis Bay. Cover carried on the flight franked GB 1½d tied Cranwell cds 6 FE with alongside superb Walvis Bay cds 8 FEB, the cds showing time code of 6.40pm reflecting the co-operation of postal authorities who had been alerted to the record attempt marking the mail with the arrival time notwithstanding this being well past closing time! A lovely clean example of rare mail from this flight on which only 20 covers were carried. Important piece, superb.
