Orange Free State 1900 VRI SG102 1d Error of Colour with Cert

1900 VRI 1d ERROR OF COLOUR on 1d deep brown (SG 102a). VF/M example. Rare. (cv£600). Photo-cert: RPS. The National Bank of South Africa returned approximately 50 of the 1d brown and 100 of 1868-94 1/- orange-yellow for VRI overprinting after the Occupation of Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. The overprinting was done and the stamps returned to the bank. The matter was referred to Major O'Meara who made efforts to recover the stamps. However, the Major's superior Officer, Colonel Williams, was President of Sydney Philatelic Society and it is more than likely that he and others shared the spoils as most of the 50 examples of the 1d brown seem to have survived, whilst fewer of the initially more abundant 1/- orange-yellow (SG 110a) are in collectors hands likely in actual fact having been destroyed. See Hisey & Bartshe Pg146.
