1881 Delightful envelope from Upsal to Germany "Via Natal, London, Hamburg" franked with single top marginal QV Bourne Head 1/- green (SG 161) tied by triple ring numeral 43 postmark. Upsal cds (DE) 12. On reverse Pretoria (DE 17) and Cape Town transit cds of DE 28. Twice struck with red 2½d accountancy mark. Annotated "Paid / Per First Mail Steamer" at bottom. Rates via Natal or Cape were the same and notwithstanding the instructive endorsements the letter was routed via Cape. Advantageously for the correspondents however the correct rate of 1/1½d to Europe was confused with the 1/- to UK, only the latter being paid. VF, a lovely attractive and uncommon letter to Europe with the Bourne Head 1/-.
