"MODERN" DEFACED DIE PROOFS, 1/- TRIANGULAR: Outsize margined PAIR from the defaced plate (value tablet erased) in DEEP SAGE-GREEN on thin wove offwhite paper. Apparently from the set of eight 1/- pairs specifically mentioned by Stevenson (Pg 121) as having the value tablet completely and deeply defaced as well as having a proving flaw: dot of colour in the SE petal of top ornament which is present in this example. See quotation following. Rare, most attractive. "Another set of eight 1s. Pairs exist which is so defaced that the word ONE SHILLING is scarcely decipherable. Each pair is identifiable by a coloured dot in the south-east petal of the top ornament of the die B stamps. The colours are black, rose, blue, purple, mauve, emerald-green and deep sage-green." Comparable to illustration similar large piece ex Lot 41, Dale-Lichtenstein, Harmers New York, 1991. See additional image below.
