South Africa Postage Due 1952 2d Black (Value) Partially Omitted

POSTAGE DUES: 1952 2d black & reddish violet BLACK (VALUE) PARTIALLY OMITTED (SG D40bb var). Superb UM left marginal block of four, the subject stamp at top left. A rarity, few of these value omissions (partial or complete) exist. The variety was caused by a progressive paper intrusion affecting a small number of stamps to varying degrees. The Union Handbook records #V11 "With part of value not printed due to intrusive paper" whilst both SG & SACC catalogues record prices only for "Value Omitted" (SG D40bb cv£5500/SACC 39d R100000). Spectacular showpiece in combination multiple with normals thus. See additional image below.
1) This block is from the 1960 printing with exterior frame cylinder 92 and interior value cylinder 85.
2)The position on the sheet for the variety in this block is proven to R8/1 by the additional varieties V2 "White leaf extended to right" R8/1 & V3 "White dot below "PO" of POSTAGE" R9/1.
Interesting we have handled an identical block to this except without the additional varieties suggesting the variety in a different position on the sheet. Furthermore apart from the complete "VALUE OMITTED" variety we have also handled varieties "back portion of 2 missing", "front portion of 2 missing (more of the "2" than in this block) and "most of the 'D' missing (both varieties in a block of four) and "2 missing except for small portion of the lower back serif, with the 'D' and full stop still showing on the stamp"
