South Africa 1920 KGV High Franking on Foreign Parcel Post

1920 FOREIGN PARCEL POST LABEL franked KGV adhesives totalling 8s6d: A wonderful postal history item from Pretoria to Germany bearing a high value franking KGV 5/-, 3 x 1/- & 6d on a label for a parcel close to the 11 lbs maximum allowed. The parcel rate to Germany at the time was 1/- for the first 1lb and 9d for each additional 1lb or part thereof. This "Free Gifts" parcel included, amongst other things, coffee, sugar & jam. It utilised book covers for the packaging - see scan below. Exceptional, a rare surviving piece. Foreign Parcel Labels were required for all overseas destinations. With the incorporation of the former German South West Africa into the postal system, Germany was a popular parcel destination especially for foodstuffs following WWI
