1905 Durban to Port Elizabeth PAQUEBOT LETTER
endorsed
"Per SS Briton"
and franked
Natal KEVII 2d tied by (on landfall and entry to the mails) straightline PAQUEBOT (Goldblatt Type M15) handstamp
with alongside Port Elizabeth cds 14 OC 05.
Further cacheted "CONSIGNEE'S LETTER".
The envelope is embossed stationery of
"Reid & Acutt / Durban"
, one of Natal's pioneering business firms with diverse interests.
Couple minor crumples.
Under paquebot arrangements letters ENTERING local mails (Cape in this instance) would be exempted from further franking with local stamps if postage paid at required rates from the sending territory / flag country of the ship.
Mail had to be handed in by an officer or representative of the ship with declaration as to origin from the vessel... likely the purpose of the "CONSIGNEE'S LETTER" cachet in this instance.
The SS Briton was a steamer of the Union Castle Line.
A rare commercial example of Paquebot Mail.
