Cape of Good Hope 1900 Rare Mexican Wreck German Cachet

1900 WRECK OF THE "MEXICAN", GERMAN CACHET: Cover from King Williams Town (squared circle cds MR..) franked with remaining 1d (other adhesives presumably making up to the 2½d rate) to Germany bearing on reverse a superb strike in black of the very rare four-line German cachet "Aus dermit dem /untergegangenen Dampfer *Mexican* / beforderten Post aus Capstadt / Bahnpostamt No15" struck over an additionally adhering ½d. This German cachet particularly elusive on interesting wreck mail. Relevant arrival mark. VF, rare.

The Union-Castle liner "Mexican" left Table Bay on 4th April 1900 for Southampton. At 2am on 5th April she was sunk by collision with the English transport "Winkfield" in fog approximately 80 miles out.
